Snail Mail: A Timeless Tradition Making a Modern Comeback

Postal Mail Revolution

If you’ve followed me on social media for any length of time, you already know how much I love giving and receiving snail mail. So, I was delighted to discover that this timeless tradition is making a modern comeback. Pen pal clubs and monthly mail subscriptions are growing in popularity. They’re everywhere, in fact. You might even call it a snail mail revolution!

Humble Beginnings

In my thirties, I self-published a women’s print magazine, HomeWords. At its height, this modest publication reached more than 400 women in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Additionally, several of the articles that I had written were reprinted in other well-known publications. It was thrilling to realize that it only took a few postage stamps to carry it around the world to connect hearts and lives. I still think about the beautiful women I met along the way, including many authors who wrote stories and articles for the publication.

By 2001, family responsibilities brought HomeWords to an end, but I knew that the self-publishing bug would bite again. And, indeed, it did! I find myself now, a 60-something grandmother, ready to set off on a new postal mail adventure. So, let me tell you more about it.

Ma Bell and the Mailman*

Call me nostalgic, but I grew up in an age where the internet did not yet exist. Dial-up phones were the primary means of communication, but it was expensive to talk for more than a minute or two. So, people relied on cards and letters to communicate, especially long-distance.

*Psst… if you’re not sure what Ma Bell refers to, it’s a slang name for the Southern Bell phone company, which most of us used as our phone service back in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Back then, we also referred to a postal carrier, male or female, as a “mailman.”

As a young girl, I could not wait to see what came in the mail, especially around the holidays. In addition to greeting cards on special occasions, I looked forward to the arrival of a kids’ magazine subscription every other month. Running to the mailbox every afternoon was the highlight of my day!

There was something special about the feeling of connection that a card or note could bring. Or how the sight of an envelope with my grandmother’s handwriting could put a smile on my face. This type of human connection is something that email, texts, or emojis can rarely ever produce. All of this made me realize that I want to do my part to reclaim this timeless tradition and bring it into modern times. Even if only one postage stamp at a time.

Introducing My New Snail Mail Publication

How will I reclaim the postal mail tradition? I’ve started a snail mail club! It’s a subscription publication for women over fifty! Woohoo! I have named it Letters from the Laughing Cabin.

In each edition of Letters from the Laughing Cabin, you will find heart-warming stories, humorous anecdotes, heart-to-heart conversations, and interviews with a featured guest or two. The purpose is to provide you with a sense that you’re sitting down for a visit with a good friend each time you read. The content is wholesome, encouraging, humorous, and Christ-honoring. We will cover a variety of topics throughout the year.

Yearly Subscriptions Now Available!

I’m excited to announce that the official inaugural edition of Letters from the Laughing Cabin will be mailed the first week of October 2026. By subscribing to a yearly subscription before September 30, 2026, you’ll be getting in on the fun from the very start! Yay! Psst… A yearly subscription is a lovely gift for anyone who enjoys receiving postal mail!

Complimentary Welcome Packet

While you’re waiting for your first edition to arrive, I’ve put together a complimentary Welcome Packet for yearly subscribers. It will be post-mailed within 3-5 business days after you subscribe. This way, we can get better acquainted, and you can have something to enjoy until Letters from the Laughing Cabin is delivered. There will be a few goodies inside your Welcome Packet, too! Tee hee!
