Birdhouse porch sitters are such a fun way to decorate for spring. They’re sturdy enough to display on the porch, but they’re pretty enough to enjoy indoors, too! When fully assembled, each porch sitter stands approximately 21 inches tall and is 5.5 inches wide at the base. A coat of spray sealant protects the paint. However, it is important to keep your porch sitter from direct sunlight and rain. I recommend displaying it beneath a covered porch or exterior roof overhang.

Printable Pattern and Video Tutorial

If you’re handy with tools, I’ve created a full-size printable pattern that you can download and print. The project page includes the printable pattern, a materials list, and the video tutorial.

In the video tutorial, I’ll show you how to assemble and paint the porch sitter like the one in the example photo.

Here is a partial list of the materials you’ll need. The full materials can be accessed after ordering:

• 3/4″ pine wood or plywood (for the house and base)
• 1/4″ luan or birch plywood (for the roof slats, flowers, flower centers, and sign)
• 2″x1″ wood trim or furring strip (for the pole)
• Acrylic craft paint in colors of your choosing (colors used for this project include red, black, dark brown, ivory, yellow, and white
• 1″ wood screws, nails or brads
• 2″ wood screws (to mount pole to base)
• Assorted paint brushes
• 1″ chip brush (optional but recommended)
• Clear spray sealant in satin or matte finish
• Paint marker, fine point, black
• Sandpaper or sanding block

Tools and Skills Required for DIYers

To make a Birdhouse Porch Sitter, you will need to have and be able to use some basic tools. Don’t forget the safety goggles and gloves!

Here is the list:

• Handsaw with a mitre box OR a power mitre saw, band saw, or scroll saw
• Phillips head screw driver (power screw driver recommended)
• Hot glue gun
• Sander or sanding block
• Safety goggles, mask, and gloves (highly recommended when working with sanders and power tools)

The center pole of the Birdhouse Porch Sitter measures 12 inches in height. The height of the birdhouse is adjustable by cutting the pole to a different length — making it shorter or taller. Alternatively, move the birdhouse up or down, as desired, before attaching it with screws.

Safety Precautions & Assembly Disclaimer

This project is recommended for intermediate to advanced crafters who have basic experience with using power tools including saws, sanders, screw drivers, and glue guns.

I cannot guarantee the finished results of your project because it will depend on your skill level and ability to cut, sand, and assemble the wood pieces. I do provide some workaround solutions in the video if you have limited wood-cutting skills — such as sourcing pre-cut wood pieces.

Please take proper precautions when working with power tools, especially saws, and wear proper safety equipment like goggles to protect your eyes, a mask to protect against sawdust inhalation, and gloves to protect your fingers. Also, be careful if you’re using a hot glue gun! Hot glue burns are no fun!
